Triumph Over Fear: A Psychological and Spiritual Journey, is a book that offers hope and insight for anyone held back by difficult emotions that prevent them from living up to their potential and experiencing joy.

Part memoir, part psychology lesson, and part metaphysical wisdom, it is an eclectic, inspiring personal story of someone who went from agoraphobic, afraid to go out in public, to a real adventurer and world traveler.

The author passes along the psychological and spiritual information and insight that she gained in her own process of growth and transformation, in a way that is both deeply personal as well as educational. The author draws from her personal experience as well as the many people she has known, worked with, and helped over the years, including decades of working with students, colleagues, family, and friends, and most of all herself.

She delves deeply into the sense of existential guilt that pervades the human condition and offers guidance on how to overcome this. Her journey is unique, but much of what she has learned is universal. At its core, it is a story of hope. Because of its eclectic mix of the psychological and the spiritual, most anyone will find some nugget of gold or gem of truth that speaks to them.

Some of the concepts might seem very familiar, and other ones might be completely new to readers. The author encourages those seeking freedom from fear to walk with her on her journey and let her share with you how she went from being very frightened and very limited in her life, to very confident and very brave.

Excerpt

It may feel scary to face emotional problems.

Jean – Fearful of Exploring the Outdoors

Jean experienced a form of anxiety known as agoraphobia. This was a case of the fear of open space. She had strong feelings of anxiety whenever she was away from the security of her home. She believed the world was not a safe place and would not try new activities or travel to entertaining events on her own.

It created a dependency nature since she had to be with someone to go somewhere. Self-protection was a priority, so she could not grow emotionally. She lost her sense of who she was, thought of herself as helpless, and experienced the well-known “identity crisis.” She could not express her anger, and with limited choices, her life became a trap.

After several years, a neighbor introduced her to a self-help group where she was able to discuss the problem with others. She searched for ways to improve her feelings toward herself, and when she finally faced the fear within her, she could begin to heal. She saw that old excuses were not the truth, and if she clung to them, they would keep her stuck in her current existence.

Her willingness to learn gave her a new direction that helped her set new goals and acquire the courage to accomplish them. For example, she was introduced to a ski club, and although she felt rather anxious at first, she pushed forward against the feelings.

In time, she learned to manage the anxiety she felt to the point where, not only did she ski yearly, she experienced it as a kind of therapy.
