Beverly’s Journey to Becoming an Author
Beverly Stowe McClure Gabe’s Guardian Angel
What? Me? An author? You’ve got to be kidding. When I was a kid, I read only what I had to at school. I never went to the library or book store. Even though my eighth-grade teacher sent a poem I wrote for an assignment to a contest and my poem was one chosen to be published in the book Young America Sings, I wasn’t interested in reading. Nope, reading was boring. I loved music. Yes. I took piano lessons. I played in the junior high and high school bands, along with being a majorette. Now, that was fun.
Then I grew older, time for college, so I attended Midwestern State University and had to decide on a major. I’d worked as a secretary at a couple of places and knew that was not for me. So, guess what?
I decided to be a teacher. And that was the beginning, of my writing career although I didn’t know it at the time. After reading at least 100 children’s books, I graduated with honors and started teaching. I made an amazing discovery. My students sometimes taught me more than I did them. How does this relate to me becoming an author you ask?
Let me tell you. For several years I taught fifth-grade science. We did a lot of experiments and had a lot of fun. We didn’t burn down the school house, either. And I had a brilliant idea. No kidding. We had children’s magazines, like Jack and Jill and others in the classroom, and the students enjoyed reading them. One day, that lightbulb brightened up my brain, and I had an idea. I’d write about science experiments we did in the classroom and send them to the magazines. A good move. Every one I submitted was published. I still have some of the magazines. My first adventures in being an author, and I haven’t stopped since.
I even got bold enough to write a novel. And in 2000 my YA novel Secrets I Have Kept was published om a disc. A short time later the publisher went out of business. Never give up, right? I sent the story to another publisher, and it came out in print and e book and is still available. From then on, I didn’t stop. I have thirteen books, everything from picture books to middle grade to young adult, still in print with a couple more that are out of contract.
I have changed my mind about reading. Yes, I was wrong, but finally discovered the truth. I’m so happy I did. My latest book, Gabe’s Guardian Angel, is happy too.
Thanks for listening to me.
