The importance of Obstacles

by Avery Vanderlyle

There are lots of quotes and sayings that I think are clever, but there aren’t a lot that move me,so  when does,I do my best to remember it.  I first heard this one from my mother-in-law: “There are no obstacles in the path.  The obstacles are the path.”   I love this sentiment that obstacles — the difficulties we face — aren’t impediments to our journey or our growth but are part of the process.   It’s important that there be challenges to help one grow and mature.

I did a bit more googling before writing this, and discovered that this saying is more often expressed  as The obstacle is the path and is attributed as a Zen proverb.   Its fitting that this profound statement comes from an ancient and wise belief system.

This is not to imply that I believe all challenges or difficulties are fair, or required, or destined.  Its not an excuse to leave structural inequities in place that impact other peoples experiences.  But it is a valuable way for me to put my challenges into perspective, and think about what I’ve learned from them.

What challenges have you learned from?
