OPTIONALÂ IWSG Day Question:Â What’s harder for you to come up with, book titles or character names?
I do not generally struggle with either. It just depends on the story. Some story titles and characters come easier than others. I try to put some thought into it. I sometimes have a character fully formed in my mind and the story tells itself. I like those stories best.
In order to build the story I normal have to have a name and idea of character. If I have a good sense of what the story is about the name is sometimes automatic in the flow. I have also come up with the title first then the story, but characters come if I have the story right in the first place.  Its middles I struggle with more than title or names.
I may research later into the story the theme, elements and such, to come up with a name that I “feel” fits better or sounds better when I say it out loud. This is on the rare occasion I realize the name I chose is not quite right or another would work so much better, or research to find something that better represents who the character now I have hung out with them a while. However, if I keep calling them the first name I picked, despite having renamed them, it usually means I have over thought it, overwhelm from too much story building.
Once I have a character defined in my minds eye naming is almost second nature because I never think of the story or character without a name. It is like they need a label to come alive for me.  On the rare occasion, I have totally gotten a character name wrong the story just doesn’t work or flow until I find it.
