Sherry Ellis Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China (+ Giveaway)
Grades 3-5
Squirt doesn’t believe Bubba can dig a hole to China. But when
the hole swallows them, the kids find themselves in Xi’an, China, surrounded by
Terracotta Warriors.
It gets worse when the ghost of the first emperor of China appears. He tells them they can’t go home until they
find his missing pi. The kids don’t know where to begin until they meet a girl
and her grandmother who promise to help find the pendant.
Soon they realize they are being followed. And they are no closer to finding the missing pi. Will Bubba and
Squirt ever make it back home?
Chinese Superstitions
By
Sherry Ellis
Thank you for having me as a guest today! When I was writing Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China, I did a lot of research on the history, language, and culture of China. My goal was to incorporate these things into the story, so it would have an educational aspect. Some of the most interesting things I learned had to do with Chinese superstition. Here’s what I discovered:
. Red is a lucky color. So is yellow. This explains why the Chinese flag is red and yellow.
. 8 is a lucky number because the pronunciation of “eight” in Chinese is “ba.” Like the word for prosperity, which is pronounced “fa.”
. Nails should not be cut at night because it brings financial problems. Or a ghost might visit you.
. Turtles are bad pets. They’re not good for business and prosperity. (I think they just plain stink!)
. Homes should not face North. North represents darkness, evil, and bad luck.
There are many more Chinese superstitions, but I’d probably have to write another book to include them! What do you think about these superstitions? Do you have any of your own?

If nails are cut during the day, I wonder if the opposite applies… financial prosperity. 🙂

My pleasure. Great book. Sounds like a fun read. When I was a kid I use to pretend to dig to China, LOL, really several places in Europe. I pretended they were all on the other side of the world.
