Have you ever gotten the feeling you were being watched or followed? I was out with my daughter, playing Pokemon Go, when I felt it. I glanced around, but no one was there. Still, when I went back to the game, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Despite not seeing him, I knew someone was out there, watching me.
“Maybe we should head home,” I suggested to my daughter.
“No way. We have to get to the Pokestop!”
I groaned. I didn’t want to startle her by telling her about my feeling, but at the same time I was freaked out. But then almost as quickly as the feeling came, it passed. Huh.
Both of our faces were plastered to our screens when I bumped right into someone. I was about to apologize, but as my eyes lifted to take in the giant before me, my voice cracked.
“I have a bone to pick with you,” the eerily familiar man said.
“I don’t even know who you are.”
“Look! I just caught a Pikachu!” My daughter cut in, hardly noticing the man.
The man smiled. “That’s wonderful,” he said, then turned to me. “What is a Pikachu?”
“Um. Who are you?”
“You mean you don’t know?
I shook my head.
“You should. You created me. I’m Kado.”
He grabbed my arm to steady me as I swayed on my feet. How was this possible? He was a character in my Shadow Stalker serial. He wasn’t real!
“So,” I said, gathering my wits by distracting myself with capturing a Weedle. “What’s this bone you need to pick?”
He snatched the phone out of my hand, so he had my full attention. “Of all the people on the Serpent Isles, not to mention the Dark Isle, why did you pick Makari to be my foster daughter’s mate? Not that I don’t like the boy, but the fact that he is Drevin’s son creates a…complication.”
“Well, don’t you see? That’s the whole point. A story needs complications to be interesting.”
“Hmm. I understand, but I’m not sure I like the direction she is headed.”
I shrugged. “Would it help if I told you it all works out in the end?”
“I suppose that will have to do. You are more cryptic than the shadow people.”
“I have to be. The story would be ruined if I gave too much away.” I grinned.
Kado nodded and handed me my phone. “It was a pleasure to meet you face to face.” Then he leaned in, his eyebrow raised. “I hope I won’t need to return.”
He disappeared before I could respond. I knew his last words would haunt me, especially as I wrote the last episodes of the serial. If Auren and Makari bothered him, how would he feel about what was coming?
“Come on, Mum! We need to get to that Pokestop!”
I blinked. “Yeah, okay. I’m coming.” I had a feeling this would not be the last time Kado appeared in my life.

Renee Scattergood lives in Australia with her husband, Nathan, and daughter, Taiya. She has always been a fan of fantasy and was inspired to become a story-teller by George Lucas, but didn’t start considering writing down her stories until she reached her late twenties. Now she enjoys writing dark fantasy.
She is currently publishing her monthly Shadow Stalker serial, and she has published a prequel novella to the series called, Demon Hunt. She is also working on a new series of novels, A God’s Deception.
