**NOTE:  I am babysitting unexpectedly so may be late getting around to comment will catch up and make the rounds soon as I am able.

The July question – What is one valuable lesson you’ve learned since you started writing?

  • Persistence with an intense single focus in order to finish and move forward is what is needed.  Achieving and maintaining is the hardest part of this one.
  • Steady small steps done every day leads to progress that will eventually move you forward.
  • BICT (Butt In Chair Typing) Is required. Everyday.
  • Plan.  List 3 goals every day.  No more, no less.  That is the days focus that must be done, anything more is a bonus. Small steps big rewards with consistency and time.
  • Consistency without faltering will give success. *Still working on this one.  Need to learn to do it through chaos when life derails me.* (The hardest part of learning a habit is figuring out how to get back to it when you fall out of the habit.)
  • Habit is key to everything that requires focus, consistency and steady work to achieve success. Honestly, it is KEY to balance and the ability live life in a rewarding and productive way.

What I’m working on.

I decided I wanted a more professional looking website, so I have been learning thru YouTube tutorials how to create the look I want thanks to Stephen Tremp who has a new site called Launch Pad and pointed me in the right direction with NYCTechClub to learn how.  It is still under construction.  Pages are still rough draft form or link back to this site, but if interested in checking it out here is the link.

Once I have it the way I want it I will have to learn how to transfer from a subdomain to this main domain and move this old site to the subdomain.

Not letting life derail you is always a struggle. I admit I haven’t mastered it yet.

  • So agree wit you on the importance of persistence. I’m hoping to get back into that now that I picked up my manuscript again. Good luck on the website development.

  • So agree on the importance of persistence. I’m hoping to get into a regular routine of writing creatively as well as for my job now that I picked up my manuscript again.

  • Agree that butt in chair is key, as is persistence and steady steps. And forgiveness and getting back into the habit when we fall out of it. Great post.

  • Steady small steps done every day. Yes! It’s realistic and achievable.
…and they all add up. Makes me think of one of my favorite quotes: a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step!

Thank you for co-hosting the IWSG this month! 🙂

  • Wonderful tips! I really like the one about three daily goals. I’ve been trying to keep what I need to do each day down to a minimum so I don’t get overwhelmed.

  • Good luck on your website. I really enjoyed your tips, especially about staying consistent and making progress small steps at a time. I’m turning my bedroom into a writing space, and one of the quotes on my wall is “A Little Progress Each Day Adds Up To Big Results.” Thinking in that positive way really pays off. When you start to focus on what you’re not doing or not accomplishing, that’s when self-doubt kicks in.

    Keep smiling,
    Yawatta

  • This is awesome advice! Thanks for sharing.

  • Great lessons. I particularly like: Persistence with an intense single focus… So true

  • I learned it’s not the words I use, it’s how I used them. I’ve really studied trad pubbed books lately. They break the rules all the time… as long as the words still flow easily. The number one rule: readability. If you don’t notice the language, you’re in the story. That’s what I strive for. One day, I’ll get there. 🙂

  • Consistency is so key isn’t it! Thanks for hosting, Juneta 🙂

  • Thanks for co-hosting this month!
Yeah, “Consistency without faltering will give success” is something I have to work on too.

  • Excellent advice! When I did my first Camp NaNo, I discovered a shirt with the slogan BIC HOK TAM (butt in chair, hands on keyboard, typing away madly). I had to have it and I wear it when I’m having trouble doing just that!

  • I’ve heard the “3 goal” limit before, but I can’t help myself–my day turns into a to-do list a mile long! Otherwise I’ll forget it all. 😉 Glad to see that writing has taught you so much though; I find it’s one of the best things I’ve done for myself!

  • Making writing a habit is a must. I just wish it was easier to do. Getting back on the wagon after being derailed by life is another tough one, but I’m working on it. Looking forward to seeing the new website when it’s ready to go! Thank you for co-hosting IWSG!

  • Persistence is something every writer needs.

  • Angela Wooldridge

Butt in chair! So true – you won’t succeed if you don’t get on with it!
and I like your 3 things list – that makes things do-able 🙂

  • Jenni Enzor

You’ve learned so many great lessons! Yes, I think consistency and small steps is so important. I’ve been amazed that even when I set very small goals for myself (a few hundreds word a day or something like that), but am consistent, how much I can accomplish. And BICT is key! Good luck on your new website!

  • That’s a lot more than one lesson! 😉

Seems like you’re doing some prep work to write a book on writing. 🙂

Setting habits is a great idea, unfortunately that’s never really worked for me. I try doing too many things at once.

Redesigning your website and moving to a new domain sounds a little scary. I wish you the best of luck.

  • Stephen Tremp

Juanita, best wishes moving forward. You can do it! The learning curve can make you pull your hair out. Or better yet drink more wine than you want to. But you’ll get there.

  • Sometimes I think we focus on the big steps and forget that it’s the small steps that move us the quickest to our end goal.

  • I like your list of lessons, especially persistence and small steps. Those always help.

  • Your website looks awesome! My writing habits are the totally the key to my success. I write at the same time every morning. My brain goes into writing mode during those wee hours everyday. I prefer to work within the subtle realms of consciousness. Great post, and thanks for co-hosting!

  • Debbie Johansson

Small steps and three goals every day is good advice, otherwise we feel overwhelmed. I’m currently doing the re-writes on my first novel and breaking it down one chapter at a time, so as you say, small steps, big rewards. Good luck with the new website (and I like those ravens too)! Thanks for stopping by my blog and co-hosting this month – it’s good to meet you. 🙂

  • Victoria Marie Lees

You are truly amazing, Juneta. All the luck with the new website. If anyone can get things to be as she wants, you can. Thanks for the tips about writing.

  • spunkonastick

Thank you for highlighting Joylene’s book.

If it’s a habit then you’re also likely to be consistent.

  • I like the three goal idea. Currently, I have about one thing I try to get done per day. I should work a little harder!

    • I read that somewhere and it works for me. One goal would work to as long is one you known you will do. That is sort of key they need to be things you know you can do and small. If major tasks break it down to small goals.

  • Lee

Brilliant minds think alike – butt in chair is on the top of my list. I’m a planner, too. Little steps to big goals. The new website is really impressive. I also hope you find a place for the ravens! Thanks for hosting today.

    • I like to keep the ravens but the photo is not large enough to use as a main page. May use them as post page They are still in my newsletter and pop up, so far. Thank you.

  • I love your new website! And consistency is difficult. I’ve not been holding myself to daily word counts and now I’m very, very behind. Will start today and make sure to meet my goals from here on out! Christy (From Erica and Christy) https://lynneawest.blogspot.com

  • Writing down 3 (and only 3) daily goals might help me… I’m terrible at making certain things regarding my writing a habit.

  • Excellent advice! BICT is my favourite 🙂 Good luck with the new site.

  • Well done on learning all these valuable lessons, which means you are doing extremely well, especially with the focus and the habit. I agree with all of them, just have some difficulty with the “achieving and maintaining”. 🙂 Thanks for co-hosting!

I like the clean look of your new blog. It is hard to organize all the good stuff and come up with an appealing, easy-to-use site.

  • Awesome advice! Being consistent and making it a habit is so important. I’m still working on that. Summers are more difficult in that area for me. Thank you for co-hosting today.

  • I have worked on these as well, but had not heard of the 3 goals per day motivation. I like this because it feels doable. One thing I’ve been working on is paying back my writing time when life steals it away (Heather Sellers’ idea in new book). Your website looks great -:)

  • Great lessons! Difficult lessons, but great! 🙂

  • Excellent advice on staying on task and getting things done.

  • Your lessons are wonderful ones to learn. I learned those as well. 🙂

  • Loni Townsend

There’s a lot of value to the things you’ve learned.

Best of luck with the website redesign. I know I’ve gone through a few iterations of my own, trying to decide what exactly it was I wanted to portray. Looking forward to what you cook up!

  • Oh yes, perseverance, a single focus, and steady small steps. So valuable and so important for any writer.
Thank you so much also for being one of the co-hosts for this month.
    Shalom aleichem,
Pat G at Everything Must Change

  • Those are great lessons, especially BICT. If you wanna be a writer…you gotta do the writing!

  • Hi Juneta, great advice. Consistency is definitely key :).

  • Thanks for co-hosting this month and stopping by my blog. I appreciate the encouragement. I love your tips, especially ‘butt in chair writing’. I like the look of the new site. Good luck with the launch.

  • The BICT is something I have done starting this year thanks to another group. Goal is to write at least 100 words each day for the entire year. So far *knock on wood* I’ve not missed a day. Setting 3 small goals daily is something I could adopt. It will help me with the focus I’m trying to have towards my writing. The links to the youtube videos is handy. I want to revamp both my blot and my website so after I make my rounds with the blogs today I’ll be taking a look at that.

  • You got me thinking about goals. Every time I try to plan more than three goals for the day, the rest drop off. The only way it works is to prioritize the first three and get more done if lightening strikes!

  • Butt in chair and perseverance are both sure needed indeed.

  • Way to go, doing it yourself. That rocks. I’m still trying to convince my 16 year old it’s not cheating to use YouTube to obtain information. He’s under the impression if he doesn’t pay for knowledge (like at school), it’s not valid. Kids these days, eh? 😉

  • You’ve learned a lot, Juneta! That’s quite an impressive list you’ve created.

  • Good luck on creating your new site. That’s a big job.

I need to change my bad habits into good ones, but it’s going to be tough during the summer. I’ll have a better shot when school starts again, but I don’t want to just give up completely on the next two months. At least my kids have a camp during July. August will probably be a bust with family trips and such.

  • Consistency is key, but I’m learning not to beat myself up when I miss a step or two. Just get myself back on track as much and as quickly as possible. 🙂

  • I know most of those authors!
Focusing on three things is easier than focusing on a ton.
Thanks for co-hosting and good luck with your website improvements.

  • Oh, I forgot to say, thank you for co-hosting this month, Pat!

  • Thank you for sharing the links you are using to update your site. My Blog is in desperate need of a major overhaul. I’ll be back and take advantage of your information. Thanks for co-hosting IWSG this July.

  • We think alike!!! Good Post and right on!

  • Oh, I like the new look! I’m hoping the ravens will come along to the new one, though. I love the ravens. I’m very cautiously thinking of upgrading my look, too. You may wind up inspiring me… again.

  • BICT is great advice. I think I need to tape that to my mirror. Good luck on the new website! Can’t wait to see it.
