Chinese Dragons Have Talent
BY C. LEE MCKENZIE
There are all kinds of Chinese Dragons and they’re multi-talented. I thought I’d write about some you might not have read about before. They’re called the Children of the Dragon, and because of their chief talents, they’re often given unique places in Chinese design. These guys have been around since the neolithic period. The first record dates 6200-5400 BC. Now that’s old.
How to use a dragon’s talents:
- The pulao dragon’s greatest talents are crying (don’t ask me why) and roaring. They often decorate bells so their talents can be heard far distances.
- The qiuniu dragons are musical and so they’re on musical instruments.
- If you want to ward off evil from your house get yourself a chiwen dragon. They’ll swallow up those evils, like fire or theft, in no time. Or you add a chaofeng dragon to the corners of your roof. These lion-like dragons will do the job, too.
- Do you have a duel scheduled anytime soon? Then the yazi dragon’s for you. Decorate your sword hilt with one of them and you’re a shoe-in to win.
- If you happen to break the law and get caught, look for the bi’an dragon on your way into the slammer. When they’re placed over prison gates nobody gets out.
There are four more of these Children, but this is enough to give you the idea that the Chinese take their Dragons very seriously and treat them with the respect they deserve.
The European Dragon came from eastern lore but grew into monstrous, fire-breathing creatures that had to be destroyed by knights when they snatched fair maidens. Their only talent seems to be to lie around on their treasure, molt and burn up stuff. I much prefer the Chinese Dragons who lend a hand once in a while and sometimes look pretty.

I’d prefer a helpful dragon as well. Don’t want to be broiled.
Yay for Lee! Fascinating stuff! I love these little bits of mythology.
I enjoyed learning more about Chinese dragons! Congrats, C. Lee!
One thing about Chinese dragons is they are so ancient that the research into them can be endless. And they’re quite elegant.
I am so impressed with Lee’s ambition! I’ve discovered so many new blogs just following her around!
I know. She is impressive, isn’t she?
That’s quite some nice compliments, Kathleen and Juneta. Thanks for them, but I have to say that I’m more driven by wanting to know everything (something, of course, that I’ll never do) than I am by ambition. Plus I get to meet great people like you two.
Congratulations C. Lee. I definitely I agree with C. Lee. I prefer the Chinese dragons too. They have more of a purpose. Now I hate the knights for killing the dragons:)
Agree. LOL, Dang Knights.
I hate to say where all of that medieval dragon slaying came from, so I’ll not do that until I write a book with a medieval dragon in it.
Looks like a great book. There’s something magnetic about dragons, isn’t there?
It is a great book and fun adventure. Yup, I admit I partial to them. I grew read Anne McCaffrey so I’m a sucker for dragons.
I still have all of her books on my “real” shelf. They’re slightly torn and tattered because at least two different generations have had at them.
Congrats to Lee!! I’m so happy for her.
I’m tickled for her too. Thanks for stopping by.
Hi, Lynda. Thanks for the visit.
I was lucky enough to read Lee’s book and it is FABULOUS! I hope it goes viral 🙂
Me too and I agree.
I’m pretty sure viral’s not happening, but the thought is good. Thanks, Jemi.
Hi and happy Wednesday, Juneta. Thanks for posting about dragons today. I really appreciate your help with my launch!
You are very welcome. Happy Wed to you too and IWSG. I link this to IWSG post too. Hope you have a great launch.
It is so great seeing Lee’s book cover everywhere. I think this book is going to do very well. Thanks for sharing the cover, Juneta!
I was happy to share. Its a fun read too. Thank you for commenting.
Hi Joylene. The cover is great. I only had a small part in making that happen. I’d love to be able to create visual art. It’s so immediate. Thanks for the comment.
