NUMBER 99 By Juneta Key
No spelling and riding without a license.
I’d only heard that 1001 times. The hardest part of broom riding? Staying on the dang thing.
My beginners permit allowed me to practice until it was old hat. My final test was tomorrow.
Except, tonight was Halloween. Everyone in the supernatural community would be at the Halloween party. Unfortunately, my date and ride called last minute, saying he had witch-warts, which was highly contagious to magical beings, especially witches, hence the name.
I might have gotten away with riding an unlicensed broom, except the mischievous Westwind snatched my invitation. I cast one tiny return spell. That is the last thing I remember, and the pivoting wind funnel smacking me.
I’d been walking round the boonies forever. Well, not really, I think. My head ached. I wasn’t sure how long I had been unconscious after the crash.
The ground was foggy. No moon. I would cast a telepathy spell to call for help, but this far out, no one would hear me. I had not mastered teleportation yet, even for short distances.
No matter how long I walked it felt like I was going nowhere. The building loomed up out of nothingness, a huge curvy-eight monstrosity.
I stopped. My skin tingled. The air hummed. I must have tripped a boundary alarm. In a blink, I went from standing in the drive to standing inside the building. A red neon sign, over the foyer desk, said, “Hotel Eternity.”
The guy behind the desk was in costume. The skull mask he wore very realistic and creepy. I could hear “The Monster Mash” playing somewhere down one of the hallways and laughter.
Had I serendipitously stumbled into my party? Doubtful. This place rattled my witchy senses.
I’d just borrow the phone and be on my way.
I approached the desk. The guy ignored me.
Determined I said, “Excuse me. Do you have a phone?”
He pushed the registrar toward me. I read: Recruitment down hall 8 and to the right.
“Look I just need a phone.” Still no response. Glaring for five minutes changed nothing.
I turned. Hallways spiraled out in every direction. Why hadn’t I noticed that before?
The door sign said:
Welcome. Grim Reaper Recruitment
Office for Witches. Please take a number
and have a seat.
I entered. The room was brimming with black cats. Hundreds of witch-brooms filled a storage rack that covered one wall.
The inner office door opened. “Number 99 please enter.” The voice sounded irritated. I looked down at my number. That was me. I took a seat at the desk.
“Spelling and riding, with no license, huh?” The woman smirked at me, even though she was the one dressed like a cartoon witch: striped stockings and red shoes.
She handed me a thick black grimoire, broom, and a sickle wand. “Welcome to the Grim Witches Squadron #99. Let me reassure you: here, you can spell and ride without a consequence.”

So, that’s how they talk people into harvesting souls for a living! I wouldn’t mind hearing more about the naughty witch, either. Sorry it’s taken me so long to get on my comments for the blog hop this month.

So fun! Poor little witch – but I guess there’s rules for a reason!

No that is the podcast name, Alone In The Room With Invisible People. It is all about writing and story. I have a coffee cup that says Writer’s Block is when your invisible friends stop talking to you.

Is she dead? I’m a tad confused, but I like the little witch and would read more about her.

Yes, that is the intention. She is at Hotel Eternity and sent to the Grim Reaper Recruiting office for witches. You should never spell and ride without a licenses at least while you are living. Thank you.
