May 1 question – How do you deal with distractions when you are writing? Do they derail you?
MY ANWSER:
Distractions can derail me, especially if it’s a person, or phone call, or if I am looking for a reason to avoid writing. I write to rain sounds which help, or set a timer. I know a lot of people like the Pomodoro method. 20 mins writing, 5 minute break, repeat, and so on. Here is a cool free online app that uses that method with an online timer background and atmosphere if you want it. Wonderspace.app
I wanted to share this brilliant poem. You may have seen it before. You should read it from top to bottom first, like normal, and then read it from bottom to top. Worst Day Ever Poem by Donna M. Phelan. It is a lesson in perspective. I got such a thrill when I read it. What a great example of an author controlling intention and word choices. I attend a class about What is genre? Taught by Mary Robinette Kowal and she shared the poem with us. The class is something she offers through her Patreon page, free to Patreon’s through her archive of class she does as part of the offerings.

Wow! The poem was masterful, and really demonstrates how your perspective can shape your reality. Thanks for sharing it, Juneta! Everyone is unique and has unique solutions for tackling distractions. I find breaking things down into small bites and going back and forth between tasks really helpful, but then my brain is like a racketball court ~ lol! Have a fun IWSG Day!

I’ve tried rain sounds before. They are too relaxing for me and put me to sleep, but good to know they can help others write. Listening to rain sounds – that’s interesting! Not heard of anyone using rain as background music. Sounds peaceful though.
