Thanks for defining speculative fiction. That term is thrown around a lot, but I’ve never really been sure what it meant until now.

I’m an only child as well. I wonder how many of us became storytellers by default?

Speculative fiction: “a secret world that exists alongside ours.” I’ve never thought about it in that way. Interesting. Also makes me think of the endless possibilities that speculative fiction offers. Wow, it boggles my non-speculative fiction brain. 🙂

Speculative Fiction is defined by what it’s not defined by; a particular genre. SF incorporates elements from many genres and presents them in a way that makes sense to the reader. Or not. I like to color outside the lines and this is wahy i’m drawn to SF.

Here’s a question for you… Did you read the SW novels that continued the story from the original trilogy? If so, did you like the turn of events it took in the later years (like the Yuuzhan Vong war and that)? I actually stopped reading the books because I felt like they were detroying the story. It was just always so depressing.

I like it how you see speculative fiction: “a secret world that exists alongside ours.” Yes, it’s so for me as well, and that’s why I write it.

I understand exactly what you mean. My characters start off as strangers, grow into friends, and sometimes it even feels as if some of them are family.

I understand making up stories as a child. The best thing about writing is we can still enjoy making up new worlds and places. Such a joy. Thanks for sharing your fave authors too.

I grew up an only child as well and always lived vicariously through the stories I read. I firmly believe that’s the main reason I love writing so much. A lot of the books you listed look interesting. I’ll have to add a few to my TBR. Great post. Hugs, Eva

SpecFic is the best! All sorts of possibilities in both reading and writing. It’s escapism at its best and so fun to live in a different world for a while 🙂

I do enjoy speculative fiction, both writing it and reading it. I’m less on the sci-fi end and more on the dark fantasy/horror end, but I’ve enjoyed all the types of worlds.

I hear you! I’m an escapest too when it come to literary works. I tend to read very widely and enjoy most of it, but there are a few genres that aren’t made for escape, and I find those are the ones that cause me anxiety and grief. Which is not why I read/write. Here’s to finding your niche and loving it!
