Vanessa Finaughty My Best Advice For Young Writers

As with everything in life, even natural writing talent must be honed in order to be the best that you can be. I advise young writers to write as frequently as possible – the more often you do something, the more skilled at it you will become. It’s also important not to edit or try to perfect your story until you have written the last word – rather make notes as you write and then address them once your story is complete. You use your left brain for logic (i.e. editing and perfecting) and your right brain for creativity (writing). Although it is certainly not impossible to use both hemispheres of your brain simultaneously, I find that doing so when writing a new story/book tends to feel too much like work (admittedly, perhaps because I’m an editor by profession) and sucks much of the fun out of writing. Although we all want to earn profits from our hard work, above all, have fun writing or readers are unlikely to have fun reading.

Favorite Pet

Since Loki, God of Mischief, features in myGrumpy Old Gods V1  story, Out of Luck, I thought it appropriate to pay tribute to the greatest cat of all time, my cat Loki.

Sadly, Loki passed on many years ago, but he will always be fondly remembered. He was a character and a half, and the most vocal cat I’ve ever known, constantly having full-on conversations with us.

He was super-lovable and just as smart – if he heard the word ‘vet’, he would be under the bed in a flash. Hubby would lift the bed so I could grab the cat, until one day when I told Loki ‘you might as well just come out; you know we will get you anyway’… and, after a moment’s contemplation, out he came, giving me a filthy look, of course!

Vanessa Finaughty is an editor by profession and author of many genres who now focuses on fantasy and science fiction. She has published 20 books, and is also published by Oxford University Press South Africa. Vanessa grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and still lives there with her husband of 20 years (this April!) and her five children (two human and three furry, four-legged).
